A 4L60E pan and filter change commonly takes about 5 quarts of automatic transmission fluid, and a completely dry 4L60E with an empty torque converter commonly takes about 11 quarts. The exact figures vary with the torque converter size and the vehicle, so use the capacity in your owner’s manual or service information, and always finish by checking the level on the dipstick.
4L60E fluid capacity
| Job | Commonly cited amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pan drop and filter change | About 5 quarts | Much of the old fluid stays in the torque converter and cooler lines. |
| Dry transmission and empty converter | About 11 quarts | For example after a rebuild or when fitting a replacement unit; varies with converter size. |
Treat these as starting points, not targets. Add fluid in stages and set the final level with the dipstick, because an overfilled transmission can foam and an underfilled one can slip.
What fluid does a 4L60E use?
Earlier 4L60E transmissions were specified for older DEXRON fluids such as DEXRON-III. GM’s current specification for these transmissions is DEXRON-VI, which GM made backward-compatible with earlier DEXRON applications. Check your owner’s manual and use a fluid licensed to the specification it calls for; avoid mixing in additives the manual does not mention.
How do you check 4L60E fluid level?
- Drive the vehicle until the transmission is at normal operating temperature.
- Park on level ground, apply the parking brake and leave the engine running.
- With your foot on the brake, move the shifter slowly through each gear, then return it to Park.
- Pull the dipstick, wipe it, reinsert it fully and pull it again to read the level against the hot mark.
- Add fluid in small amounts through the dipstick tube and recheck. Do not overfill.
While you are there, check the fluid’s condition. Dark fluid with a burnt smell, or debris on the dipstick, points to overheating or wear; our guides on transmission slipping and 4L60E problems explain what those signs can mean. For service intervals, see how often to change transmission fluid.
Filling a replacement 4L60E
A replacement transmission usually arrives dry or nearly dry, so it needs close to the full capacity before the first start. Follow the transmission supplier’s fill instructions, start the engine, cycle through the gears and set the level with the dipstick once the fluid is hot. We carry 4L60E replacement transmissions supplied with a torque converter on our 4L60E transmissions page.
