What Does an Intake Manifold Do? Types and Materials

What an intake manifold does, how runner length shapes power, single plane vs dual plane vs tunnel ram, materials, and bad intake manifold gasket symptoms.

An intake manifold distributes air from the throttle body to each cylinder’s intake port. On modern fuel-injected engines it carries air only, with injectors at or near each port; on older carbureted engines it carried the air-fuel mixture. Its runner length and plenum volume shape where the engine makes its power, and it also supplies vacuum for systems such as the brake booster and crankcase ventilation.

What an intake manifold does

  • Distributes air evenly so each cylinder gets a similar charge.
  • Shapes the power curve: long, narrow runners help low and midrange torque; short runners and a larger plenum favor high-RPM power.
  • Mounts parts: the throttle body, injectors, fuel rail and sensors such as the manifold pressure sensor often attach to it.
  • Provides vacuum for the brake booster, PCV system and other accessories.

Intake manifold types

  • Single and dual plane: common on carbureted V8s; dual plane for street torque, single plane for higher RPM.
  • Long-runner EFI manifolds: typical factory designs for strong low and midrange torque.
  • Tunnel ram: tall, straight runners and a high-mounted plenum for maximum airflow at high RPM, usually needing a hood scoop or no hood.

Materials: aluminum, composite and carbon fiber

Aluminum is strong and easy to modify. Many modern factory manifolds are composite (glass-reinforced nylon), which is light and stays cooler. Carbon fiber is used for high-end parts because it is very light and stiff. Cooler intake air is denser, so manifolds that resist heat soak help power.

Bad intake manifold gasket symptoms

  • Rough idle, hesitation or misfires from unmetered air; see engine misfire.
  • Lean codes such as P0171 or P0174.
  • A whistling or hissing sound at idle.
  • Coolant leaks or coolant loss on engines where coolant passes through the intake manifold.

Upgrading an intake manifold

An aftermarket manifold helps most when it matches the rest of the engine: the port shape of the cylinder heads, the camshaft and the RPM range you actually drive in. Before buying, check that the throttle body, injectors, fuel rail and sensors fit, that there is hood clearance, and whether the engine computer needs to be adjusted for the new airflow. A manifold designed for high-RPM power can cost low-speed torque on a street engine.

Carbon fiber tunnel ram for the LT2

The Performance Design Carbon pTR intake manifold (70620-01-BK, $2,199.99) is a tunnel ram listed for the engines in 2020-2025 Corvettes. It pairs a glass-reinforced nylon lower runner pack with a 5-layer carbon fiber upper plenum, has modular velocity stacks for 6.5, 8.0 and 9.0 inch runner lengths and a 105mm throttle body flange, and is tested to over 50 psi of boost. Performance Design positions it for hot rods, resto-mods, race boats and off-road race trucks where hood clearance is not a concern. More: Corvette parts and what does a cold air intake do?
