A clutch commonly lasts somewhere between 50,000 and 100,000 miles, and some last far longer, but the range is wide because driving habits matter more than anything else. City driving, frequent hill starts, riding the clutch, towing and hard launches wear it quickly, while mostly highway driving with smooth shifts can let a clutch outlast the car’s first owner.
What wears out a clutch
| Habit or condition | Effect |
|---|---|
| Riding the clutch (foot resting on the pedal) | Partial slip and heat |
| Holding the car on a hill with the clutch | Slip and glazing |
| Stop-and-go traffic | Many engagements |
| Towing or heavy loads | More slip on take-off |
| Hard launches and added power | High heat and wear |
| Oil leaks onto the disc | Sudden slip |
Signs a clutch is wearing out
- Engagement point creeping higher in the pedal travel
- Slipping in high gears under load; see clutch slipping
- Burning smell after hill starts
- Chatter or shudder when pulling away; see clutch chatter
- Noises when pressing or releasing the pedal; see signs of a bad clutch
How long does a clutch last once it starts slipping?
Usually not long: slipping creates heat that glazes the friction surfaces and accelerates wear, and the flywheel can be damaged. Plan the replacement soon after slip appears.
How to make a clutch last
- Take your foot off the pedal except when shifting.
- Use the handbrake or hill-start assist on hills rather than slipping the clutch.
- Shift into neutral at long stops rather than holding the pedal down.
- Engage smoothly and avoid high-rpm launches.
- Fix oil leaks around the bellhousing promptly.
Clutch life in years
Because wear depends on use rather than time, a lightly used car can keep its clutch for well over a decade, while a city delivery vehicle may need one every few years. Hydraulic parts such as the master and slave cylinders and the release bearing can age independently, so a soft or sticking pedal is not always a worn clutch.
Performance clutches and lifespan
A performance clutch chosen for the engine’s torque can last well on a modified car, because it is not being pushed past its limit. A clutch that is too weak for added power wears out quickly, and one that is far stronger than needed can be harsh in traffic; see stage 1 vs stage 2 clutch.
Replacing a clutch
A clutch job means removing the transmission, so replace the release bearing and pilot bearing at the same time and resurface or replace the flywheel. Our ACT clutch kits cover the WRX and STI, Civic Si and Integra, and Evo, such as the ACT HD kit for the Evo X ($915.00).
