LS Swap Transmission Options: 4L60E, 4L80E, 6L80E and More

LS swap transmission options compared: 4L60E, 4L80E, 6L80E and older GM automatics, controller needs, a swap parts checklist and C10 or S10 choices.

The most common LS swap transmissions are GM’s own: the 4L60E or 4L65E for light to moderate builds, the 4L80E for high power and heavy vehicles, and the 6L80E for a modern six-speed with better gearing. Older non-electronic GM automatics such as the TH350 and TH400 also bolt to the LS bell housing pattern with the right flexplate and converter spacing parts. Manual swaps use GM six-speeds or other manuals with adapter parts. The right choice depends on power, vehicle weight, tunnel space and how you want to control the transmission.

LS swap transmission options

Transmission Suits Notes From in our range
4L60E / 4L65E Mild to moderate power, lighter vehicles Compact, common; needs electronic control $2,499.00
4L80E High power, trucks, towing Heavier and longer; strong; needs electronic control $2,599.00
6L80E Modern six-speed gearing and efficiency Needs the right controller and programming $2,699.00
TH350 / TH400 Simple builds without transmission electronics Needs correct flexplate and converter spacing Not listed

All three electronic units we list come with a torque converter; check each listing for fitment and what is included.

Control: the part people underestimate

Electronic transmissions need a controller. Some LS engine computers can control a 4L60E or 4L80E with the right programming; many swaps use a stand-alone transmission controller instead. The 6L80E needs a compatible controller and programming. Budget for the controller and wiring alongside the transmission; see transmission control module.

Swap parts checklist

  • Flexplate and torque converter matched to the transmission
  • Crossmember and transmission mount for the new position
  • Driveshaft shortened or lengthened to suit
  • Cooler and lines; see transmission cooler
  • Shifter and linkage, plus the range sensor wiring; see transmission range sensor
  • Speedometer signal for the vehicle

4L60E vs 4L80E for an LS swap

The 4L60E is smaller and fits more tunnels; the 4L80E handles much more torque and towing but is heavier and longer. See 4L60E vs 4L65E vs 4L80E, 4L60E to 4L80E swap and 4L80E vs TH400.

Good transmission for a C10 or S10 LS swap

For a light S10 or a cruiser C10 with a stock-power LS, a 4L60E or 4L65E is the common choice for its size. For a C10 that will tow or make big power, a 4L80E is stronger if it fits. A 6L80E gives the widest gear spread if you are prepared for the controller work.
