How Long Does an Intercooler Last? Do Intercoolers Go Bad?

How long an intercooler lasts, how intercoolers go bad (leaks, damage, oil, air-to-water faults), warning signs, upkeep and intercooler hoses.

An intercooler has no moving parts, so the core itself often lasts the life of the vehicle. What fails is around it: cracked plastic end tanks, leaking couplers and hoses, fins damaged by road debris, oil buildup from the intake, and, on air-to-water systems, the pump, heat exchanger and coolant. So the answer to “do intercoolers go bad?” is yes, but usually through leaks and blockages rather than wear.

How intercoolers go bad

  • Boost leaks: cracked end tanks, split hoses or loose clamps let boost escape.
  • Physical damage: front-mounted cores take stone chips and bent fins; see front mount vs top mount intercoolers.
  • Oil contamination: oil mist from crankcase ventilation or a worn turbo coats the inside and reduces cooling.
  • Air-to-water failures: a failed pump, low coolant or clogged heat exchanger stops cooling.

Signs of an intercooler problem

  • Lower boost or a boost leak hiss under load.
  • Power that fades as the engine heats up.
  • Higher intake air temperatures on a gauge or scan tool.
  • Oil in the intercooler pipes, or a check engine light for boost or air-flow faults.

How to make an intercooler last

  • Check hoses, couplers and clamps whenever the car is serviced.
  • Keep the fins clean and straight, and the front of the core clear of debris.
  • On air-to-water systems, check the coolant level and that the pump runs.
  • Find and fix the source of any oil in the intake.

Cleaning an intercooler

If oil has built up inside, remove the intercooler and flush it with a suitable degreaser, then rinse and let it dry completely before refitting. Clean the outside fins with low-pressure water or air from the back side. Then find the source of the oil, such as a worn turbo seal or a crankcase ventilation problem, or it will come back. A blow-off or bypass valve that sticks open also causes boost loss that can look like an intercooler leak; see what a blow-off valve does.

Intercooler hoses

Rubber and silicone hoses age with heat and oil exposure; inspect them for cracks and softness, and replace any that are swollen or split. A leak test of the boost system finds leaks that are hard to see.

Do you need an intercooler?

An intercooler cools the compressed air from a turbo or supercharger so the engine makes more power safely; see what an intercooler does and supercharger vs turbo.
