A 4R100 in an F-250, F-350, Excursion or E-series van commonly lasts 150,000 to 200,000 miles with regular fluid service, and many go further. It is Ford’s heavy-duty four-speed, the electronically controlled successor to the E4OD, and it was built for the 7.3L Power Stroke and big gas engines. What shortens its life is heat from towing, neglected fluid, and added diesel power that the stock converter and clutches were not built for.
Weak points that decide its life
- Heat when towing heavy loads, which breaks down fluid and glazes clutches.
- Torque converter lockup wear and shudder; see P0741.
- Solenoid pack faults that cause erratic shifts; see transmission solenoid packs.
- Added power on modified 7.3s, which overwhelms stock clutches.
See 4R100 problems.
How to make a 4R100 last
- Service the fluid and filter regularly, more often when towing.
- Run an auxiliary cooler and watch fluid temperature; see transmission coolers.
- Use overdrive lockout on grades and heavy loads.
- Match the transmission build to any added engine power.
Signs it is wearing out
- Slipping or flaring between gears; see transmission slipping.
- Delayed engagement into drive or reverse; see delayed engagement.
- Shudder at steady speeds from the converter clutch; see torque converter shudder.
- Dark, burnt fluid or debris in the pan.
- A check engine light with transmission codes; use a scan tool that reads the transmission module.
Checking a used Super Duty with a 4R100
Ask how the truck was used and whether the engine has added power, since modified 7.3s are hard on stock 4R100s. Check the fluid color and smell, scan for transmission codes, and drive it hot with a load if possible, watching for a flare on the 2-3 shift and for converter shudder at light throttle on the highway. Service records showing regular fluid changes are a strong point in its favor, and an auxiliary cooler suggests a careful previous owner.
How hard is it to rebuild a 4R100?
It is a big, heavy unit with a straightforward design, and many shops rebuild them, but removal and installation on a Super Duty is a large job. A complete replacement unit often saves time; compare in transmission rebuild vs replacement. For the earlier unit, see E4OD vs 4R100.
