Death wobble is a violent side-to-side shaking of the front wheels and steering that starts suddenly, usually after hitting a bump at highway speed, and continues until you slow down a lot. It happens on trucks and SUVs with a solid front axle, such as Ram 2500 and 3500 4×4 pickups, Ford Super Duty 4x4s and Jeep Wranglers. It is almost always caused by worn or loose steering and suspension parts, most often the track bar, and the fix is to find and replace the loose part, not to mask it.
What to do when death wobble starts
- Hold the steering wheel firmly and do not slam the brakes.
- Ease off the throttle and slow down gradually; the shaking usually stops as speed drops.
- Pull over when it is safe and look for anything obviously loose or damaged before driving on.
Common causes of death wobble
- Track bar: the bar that locates the axle side to side. Worn bushings, a worn ball joint end or loose bolts are the most common cause.
- Ball joints: worn ball joints let the knuckles move.
- Tie rod ends and drag link: play in the steering linkage lets the wheels oscillate.
- Steering box: a worn steering box or loose mounting bolts adds play to the whole system.
- Control arm bushings: worn bushings change caster and let the axle shift.
- Wheel bearings: play in a hub lets the wheel move.
- Tires and alignment: out-of-balance or out-of-round tires and incorrect caster or toe can trigger the oscillation, especially after a lift or larger tires.
How to find the cause: the dry steering test
With the truck on the ground and the engine running, have a helper rock the steering wheel back and forth quickly, about an inch or two each way, while you watch each joint from underneath. Look for movement at the track bar ends and mounts, the tie rod ends, the drag link, the steering box and its mounting bolts, and the pitman arm. Any joint that moves before the part it connects to has play. Then lift the front and check the ball joints and wheel bearings by rocking each wheel top to bottom and side to side.
Fixing death wobble
- Replace worn joints, bushings and the track bar as needed, and torque every steering and suspension fastener to specification.
- Get an alignment afterward, paying attention to caster and toe.
- Balance the tires and check them for damage or out-of-round wear.
- A steering stabilizer can damp vibration, but it does not fix death wobble. If the wobble returns after a new stabilizer, something is still loose.
Steering box for Ram 2500 and 3500
If the dry steering test shows play in the steering box itself, replacing it is part of tightening the front end. The Red-Head RH2881 steering gear box ($866.00) replaces the factory box on 2009-2020 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks and keeps the factory steering shaft and stock pitman arm, which matters on lifted trucks with a dropped pitman arm.
