For a trolling motor, lithium (LiFePO4) batteries are much lighter than lead-acid, deliver most of their rated capacity instead of about half, hold their voltage so the motor keeps its speed until the battery is nearly empty, and last thousands of cycles instead of hundreds. They cost much more upfront and need a lithium-compatible charger. For anglers who fish often, the longer life usually narrows the cost gap.
Lithium vs lead-acid at a glance
| Lead-acid (flooded or AGM) | Lithium (LiFePO4) | |
|---|---|---|
| Usable capacity of a 100 Ah battery | About 50 Ah | About 80 to 100 Ah |
| Weight | Heavy | Much lighter for the same capacity |
| Voltage under load | Drops steadily, motor slows | Stays flat until nearly empty |
| Cycle life | Hundreds of cycles | Thousands of cycles |
| Charging | Standard marine charger | Lithium charger or lithium mode |
| Upfront cost | Lower | Higher |

Are lithium trolling motor batteries worth it?
- Worth it: you fish often, run a 24- or 36-volt motor, want to save weight, or need all-day run time.
- Less worth it: you fish a few times a year, your lead-acid batteries are new, or your charger cannot charge lithium.
What lithium batteries cost
Our Ionic 12V 300Ah LiFePO4 deep cycle battery with Bluetooth and heater is $1,599.00, and the LBP lithium battery bundles are $970.00. The maker cycle ratings for the batteries we carry are covered in how long lithium batteries last.
Switching to lithium
- Use a charger with a lithium profile; see how to charge trolling motor batteries.
- For 24- and 36-volt systems, use identical lithium batteries and follow the maker’s guidance on series connections; see 24V and 36V trolling motor batteries.
- Avoid charging below freezing unless the battery has a built-in heater, like the Ionic model.
- Check the battery’s continuous current rating against your motor’s maximum draw.
Weight and boat performance
A 36-volt lead-acid trolling bank is three heavy batteries, often mounted in the bow or stern. Replacing it with lithium removes a lot of weight, which can help a small boat plane faster, ride level and use less fuel. It also makes the batteries easier to remove for charging or winter storage.
Lifetime cost
Compare cost per cycle rather than sticker price. A lead-acid battery that lasts a few hundred cycles may need replacing several times over the life of one lithium battery, especially if it is often drained deeply. If you fish only occasionally, lead-acid may never reach the end of its cycle life, and the comparison shifts back toward it.
Sizing
Because lithium delivers most of its rating, a smaller lithium battery can match a larger lead-acid one in run time. Match the bank to your motor; see trolling motor size guide and deep cycle vs starting battery.
