Breaking in a new four-stroke outboard means varying the engine speed and avoiding long periods at full throttle for the first several hours, so the rings and bearings seat properly. Most makers specify a break-in period of roughly 10 hours, with the most restrictions in the first one or two hours. Your owner manual’s procedure is the one to follow, since details differ between Mercury, Suzuki, Tohatsu and other brands.
A typical outboard break-in procedure
| Engine hours | Typical guidance |
|---|---|
| First hour or two | Mostly moderate throttle; vary engine speed; avoid long idling and sustained full throttle |
| Up to about 10 hours | Vary speeds; short bursts of full throttle are often allowed; avoid holding one speed for long periods |
| After break-in | Normal operation; many makers call for a first service at around 20 hours or the first season |
These are general patterns; check the exact rpm limits and timing in your manual.
Why break-in matters
New piston rings need varied cylinder pressure to seat against the cylinder walls. Running at one constant speed or idling for hours can glaze the cylinders, while sustained full throttle on a new motor adds heat before parts have bedded in. The same principle applies to car engines; see engine break-in procedure.
Break-in oil and fuel
Four-stroke outboards come with oil in the crankcase; check the level before the first start and frequently during break-in. Use the fuel grade the manual specifies. Two-stroke motors may call for a richer oil mix during break-in, so read the manual if you have one.
Break-in checklist
- Check engine oil and gear oil before the first start.
- Confirm a strong telltale water stream as soon as the motor starts; see outboard overheating.
- Vary throttle and avoid trolling for hours on a new motor.
- Make sure the propeller lets the engine reach its rated wide-open throttle range; see the propeller sizing guide.
- Book the first service on time; see outboard motor maintenance and how to change lower unit oil.
Kicker motors and break-in
Kicker motors spend much of their life trolling at low speed, so give a new kicker some varied running during break-in before settling into long trolling sessions; see kicker motors.
