P0101 Code: MAF Sensor Range/Performance, Causes and Fixes

P0101 means Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Range/Performance. Symptoms, common causes, how to diagnose it and whether it is safe to drive.

P0101 means Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Range/Performance. The MAF sensor reading does not make sense compared with what the computer expects from engine speed, throttle and manifold pressure. It is a generic OBD-II code, so the definition is the same on any make, but the most likely cause varies by engine; confirm with a scan tool and the service information for your vehicle before buying parts.

What P0101 means

Most engine sensors receive a 5-volt reference and return a signal between roughly 0 and 5 volts. Codes ending in circuit high or circuit low usually point to an electrical fault: an open circuit, a short or an unplugged connector. Range/performance codes mean a signal is present but disagrees with what the computer expects from the other sensors, which more often points to a dirty sensor, an air leak or a mechanical problem.

P0101 symptoms

  • Hesitation, surging or stalling
  • Poor fuel economy
  • Lean or rich codes alongside it

Common causes of P0101

  • Dirty or oil-contaminated MAF sensor
  • Air leaks between the MAF and the throttle body
  • Clogged air filter
  • Damaged wiring or connector
  • Failed sensor

How to diagnose P0101

  1. Inspect the air filter and intake ducting for cracks
  2. Clean the MAF with MAF cleaner and recheck
  3. Compare MAF readings at idle and under load with expected values
  4. Check the connector and wiring

Can you drive with P0101?

Usually drivable, but the engine may run poorly and enter a fallback mode. Repair it to restore performance and fuel economy.

P0101 tips

Clean the MAF with MAF sensor cleaner only, never brake or carburetor cleaner, and never touch the sensing element. Over-oiled reusable cotton air filters are a known cause of contamination. A common rule of thumb is roughly 1 gram per second per liter of displacement at a warm idle; a reading far below that suggests a dirty sensor or a leak after it.

Will P0101 clear itself?

If the fault stops, the computer turns off the check engine light by itself after several drive cycles without seeing it again, and the code stays in memory as history for a while. Clearing P0101 with a scan tool after a repair is fine, but if the cause is still there the code returns, sometimes within one drive. Disconnecting the battery also clears codes on most vehicles, but it erases learned fuel trims and idle settings as well.

When it is more than a sensor

Sensor codes are usually fixed with a sensor, a connector, wiring or a leak repair rather than major parts. If testing turns up internal engine trouble instead, see how to tell if an engine is blown and compare engines by code on our engines page.
