P0193 Code: Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor High, Causes and Fixes

P0193 means Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor A Circuit High. Symptoms, common causes, how to diagnose it and whether it is safe to drive.

P0193 means Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor A Circuit High. The fuel rail pressure sensor signal voltage is higher than possible, usually an electrical fault. It is a generic OBD-II code, so the definition is the same on any make, but the most likely cause varies by engine; confirm with a scan tool and the service information for your vehicle before buying parts.

What P0193 means

Modern engines measure boost and fuel rail pressure and compare them with a desired value calculated from engine speed, load and throttle. When actual pressure falls short of desired for long enough, the computer sets a code and often reduces power to protect the engine. Watching desired and actual values side by side on a scan tool shows whether the shortfall is constant or only appears under load.

P0193 symptoms

  • Hard starting or no-start
  • Reduced-power mode
  • Stalling

Common causes of P0193

  • Open ground or short to voltage
  • Failed sensor
  • Damaged connector

How to diagnose P0193

  1. Check the sensor ground and reference voltage
  2. Inspect the connector and wiring
  3. Replace the sensor if wiring tests good

Can you drive with P0193?

Not reliably; repair before relying on the vehicle.

P0193 tips

A high-circuit code is electrical, so check the sensor ground first: an open ground drives the signal high. A connector disturbed during fuel system work is a common cause. Rail pressure sensors usually share a 5-volt reference with other sensors, so if several sensor codes appeared at the same time, look at the shared reference and ground before replacing the rail sensor. On many diesels the sensor threads into the rail and is sold separately, but some are only available with the rail.

Will P0193 clear itself?

If the fault stops, the computer turns off the check engine light by itself after several drive cycles without seeing it again, and the code stays in memory as history for a while. Clearing P0193 with a scan tool after a repair is fine, but if the cause is still there the code returns, sometimes within one drive. Disconnecting the battery also clears codes on most vehicles, but it erases learned fuel trims and idle settings as well.
