Projector vs Reflector Headlights: Which Is Better?

How projector and reflector headlights differ in beam pattern, glare and LED compatibility, which is better for most drivers and how to upgrade properly.

Reflector headlights place the bulb in front of a mirrored bowl that spreads light across the road, while projector headlights send light through a lens with a cutoff shield, which focuses the beam and creates a sharp horizontal cutoff. Projectors generally put more light where you need it with less glare for oncoming drivers, especially with LED or HID light sources; reflectors are simpler and less expensive and work well with the bulbs they were designed for.

Projector vs reflector headlights

Factor Projector Reflector
Beam pattern Focused, with a sharp cutoff Wider, softer edges
Glare control Good when aimed correctly More glare if the light source does not match the design
LED and HID Well suited Retrofit bulbs can scatter light
Cost and complexity Higher Lower

Which is better?

For most drivers, a well-designed projector gives better visibility and less glare. A reflector designed around a specific bulb can still perform well; the problem comes from fitting a light source the reflector was not designed for, which scatters light and dazzles other drivers.

Trucks with projector or reflector trims

Many pickups, including the Ram 1500 and Ford F-150, use reflector headlights on some trims and projectors on others. Upgrading usually means swapping complete housings designed for the vehicle rather than changing bulbs alone.

LED bulbs in reflector housings

Plug-in LED bulbs in housings designed for halogen bulbs often produce a poor beam pattern and glare. Complete LED headlight assemblies designed as a unit avoid that problem and keep the beam pattern the maker intended.

Light color and output

Brighter is not automatically better. A whiter LED light can make road markings stand out, but a beam that puts too much light close to the car can reduce how far you see at night. Look for even spread, a clean cutoff and good reach down the road, and compare beam photos where makers publish them. High beams matter too: a good high-beam pattern lights the edges of the road and reaches far ahead.

Aim matters

Any new headlight needs correct aim, or even a well-designed beam will dazzle other drivers or light too little of the road; see how to adjust headlights. Check that replacement headlights are marked as compliant for road use in your state.

Sequential LED headlights

Complete LED headlight assemblies often add features such as sequential turn signals. For the 2015-2017 WRX and STI and 2018-2021 WRX, our Molded Innovations Odyssey Series sequential LED headlights are $934.99; see Subaru WRX and STI parts and headlight condensation.
