What Transmission Do I Have? GM, Ford and Ram Identification

How to find your transmission code from GM RPO codes, Ford door-jamb labels, your VIN or the transmission itself.

Before ordering a replacement transmission you need its exact model code. Here are the reliable ways to find it.

GM trucks, SUVs and cars: the RPO code sticker

GM vehicles carry a Service Parts Identification label, usually in the glovebox, on the spare tire cover or inside the console lid, listing three-character RPO codes. The transmission is one of them: M30 is a 4L60E, M32 a 4L65E, MT1 a 4L80E, MYC a 6L80 and MYD a 6L90.

Ford: the door-jamb label

Ford’s Safety Compliance Certification label on the driver’s door jamb includes a transmission code, marked TR. A Ford dealer can decode it from your VIN.

Dodge and Ram

Use your VIN with a dealer or parts lookup, or read the identification tag or stamping on the transmission case.

Look at the transmission itself

Many transmissions have an ID tag or stamped number on the case, and the oil pan shape and bolt count help tell similar units apart. For example, the GM 4L60E pan has 16 bolts and the 4L80E pan 17.

Why the exact code matters

Transmissions that share a code can still differ in bellhousing pattern, case length, output shaft, electrical connectors and 2WD or 4WD layout between model years, so match the year, engine and drivetrain as well as the code. That is also why the same truck can take a different unit after a mid-year change.
