A 36-volt trolling motor runs on three 12-volt batteries wired in series, while a 24-volt motor runs on two. Higher voltage lets a motor produce more thrust, typically 100 lb or more, and run more efficiently at high output, which suits big, heavy boats and long days in wind and current. A 24-volt motor, usually 70 to 80 lb of thrust, suits most bass boats, deep-Vs and medium boats. Choose by boat weight and conditions, and remember that a 36V system adds a third battery’s weight and cost.
24V vs 36V at a glance
| 24V | 36V | |
|---|---|---|
| Batteries (12V) | Two in series | Three in series |
| Typical thrust | About 70 to 80 lb | About 100 lb and up |
| Typical boats | Bass boats, deep-Vs and medium boats | Large, heavy boats and rough water |
| Weight and cost | Lower | Higher: a third battery and a 36V-capable charger |
Can you run a 36V trolling motor on 24V?
Generally no, not properly. A 36V motor connected to 24V will run with much less power and speed, and some electronically controlled motors will not run at all or will show errors. It is not a substitute for the correct voltage. Check the motor’s manual before trying.
Can you use a 36V battery with a 24V motor?
No. Supplying more voltage than a motor is designed for can damage the motor and its electronics. Always match the battery system to the motor’s rated voltage. With lithium batteries, use a single battery of the correct voltage or the correct number of 12V batteries in series, and a charger made for that setup; see lithium battery chargers.
How much thrust do you need?
A common guide is about 2 lb of thrust per 100 lb of fully loaded boat weight, with extra margin for wind, current and GPS anchoring. See the trolling motor size guide and 12V vs 24V trolling motors.
Wiring and batteries
Wire the batteries in series, positive to negative, and take the motor leads from the open terminals at each end. Use the wire size and circuit breaker the motor maker specifies. See how to wire a 24 volt trolling motor, deep cycle vs starting batteries and lithium vs lead-acid trolling batteries.
