The 5.7 Hemi is a 5.7-liter (345 cubic inch) V8 from Chrysler, introduced in the 2003 Ram and later used in Ram, Dodge, Chrysler and Jeep vehicles. In the Ram 1500 it was rated at 345 hp through 2008, 390 hp from 2009 when variable cam timing was added, and 395 hp in later Ram 1500s. It holds about 7 quarts of oil with a filter change, and its firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.

5.7 Hemi oil capacity
Plan on about 7 quarts with a new filter, and use the viscosity and oil specification your owner’s manual calls for; the correct oil matters on engines with MDS and variable cam timing. Regular oil changes also help the valvetrain, where lifter and camshaft wear is the most widely reported weak point; see 5.7 Hemi tick: causes.
Which vehicles use the 5.7 Hemi?
Besides Ram 1500 pickups, the 5.7 Hemi has been offered in gas Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks, the Dodge Durango, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Commander, the Chrysler 300C, and the Dodge Charger, Magnum and Challenger R/T. Engines and their parts differ between these applications and model years, so match a replacement to your vehicle and year.
What is MDS on a 5.7 Hemi?
The Multi-Displacement System shuts off four cylinders at light load, such as steady highway cruising, to save fuel, and brings them back when you need power. An ECO light on the dash shows when it is active on many models.
Firing order and cylinder numbering
Chrysler numbers the odd cylinders (1, 3, 5, 7) on the driver’s side and the even cylinders on the passenger side, with cylinders 1 and 2 at the front. Our firing order guide shows the layout next to GM and Ford V8s. A misfire code that names a cylinder uses this numbering; see engine misfire.
