Engine Replacement Cost: Short Block, Long Block or Complete Engine

What decides the cost of a replacement engine, with our prices for Hemi, Vortec, Triton, Cummins and Subaru engines and blocks.

Replacing an engine costs the price of the replacement engine plus the labor to swap it, and the total depends heavily on which engine you need and how complete the replacement is.

What affects engine replacement cost

  • How complete the engine is: a short block (bottom end only) costs less than a long block (with heads and valvetrain), which costs less than a complete engine, but more parts must be moved over from your old engine. See short block vs long block.
  • The engine: diesel and high-performance engines cost more than common gasoline V8s.
  • New, remanufactured or built: remanufactured engines are rebuilt from cores; performance blocks use upgraded internals.
  • Labor and extras: installation time varies by vehicle; gaskets, fluids, a water pump or sensors may be needed. Ask your shop for an installation quote.

Repair or replace?

A replacement usually makes sense when the damage is internal and widespread: a spun bearing or bent rod, a cracked block, low compression on several cylinders, or heavy oil consumption on a high-mileage engine. Smaller faults such as a head gasket, an oil leak or a sensor are normally repaired. Diagnose before deciding: a compression and leak-down test shows the condition of the rings, valves and gasket, and spun rod bearings and seized engines explains bottom-end failures.

Costs to plan for besides the engine

  • Gaskets, seals, fluids and filters for the swap.
  • Parts commonly replaced while the engine is out, such as the water pump, hoses, motor mounts and the rear main seal.
  • Parts moved from your old engine onto a short or long block, which adds labor.
  • Any core deposit or return terms stated on the listing.
  • A proper break-in and an early oil change; see engine break-in procedure.
