Transmission Replacement Cost: Prices by Transmission Code

What decides the cost to replace a transmission, with our replacement transmission prices for each transmission code.

The cost to replace a transmission has two parts: the replacement unit and the labor to remove the old one and install the new one. Our replacement automatic transmissions range from $2,199 to $7,195 depending on the transmission code and build level, and most include a matched torque converter.

What affects the cost

  • Transmission code: heavy-duty units (4L80E, 6L90E, 68RFE, Allison 1000, 6R140) cost more than light-duty ones.
  • Build level: replacement-grade builds cost less than upgraded units with heavy-duty converters, upgraded pumps and shift kits.
  • Drivetrain and model year: 2WD and 4WD versions, and different years, can need different cases and output shafts.
  • Labor: installation time varies by vehicle; ask your repair shop for an installation quote.
  • Extras: fluid, a cooler flush or cooler, mounts and a programming or relearn procedure may be needed.

Where the labor time goes

Removing a transmission usually means taking out the driveshaft, and on 4WD trucks the transfer case, plus cooler lines, wiring, shift linkage, the crossmember and sometimes exhaust parts. The new unit then has to be installed, filled with the correct fluid and checked at temperature, and many modern transmissions need a relearn so the computer adapts its shifts. That is why labor varies so much between vehicles.

Avoiding costly mistakes

  • Confirm the exact transmission code with your VIN before ordering; see what transmission do I have?
  • Flush or replace the cooler and lines so debris from the old unit does not damage the new one.
  • Choose a unit with a matched torque converter, and the build level that suits towing or added power.

Repair, rebuild or replace?

A minor fault such as low fluid, a leaking seal or a failed solenoid may be repairable. When the internal clutches, bands or gears are worn, a rebuild or a complete replacement unit is the usual choice; a replacement unit gets the vehicle back on the road without waiting for your transmission to be rebuilt.
