What Comes With a Long Block Engine?

What is included with a long block engine and what usually is not, long block vs short block vs complete engine, Cummins long blocks, and parts to transfer.

A long block is an engine block assembled with its rotating assembly and cylinder heads: the block, crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons and rings, camshaft or camshafts, cylinder heads with valves and springs, and usually the timing set and valve covers or oil pan depending on the supplier. It typically does not include the intake manifold, exhaust manifolds, fuel system, sensors, wiring, accessories such as the alternator and water pump, or the flywheel or flexplate. Exactly what is included varies by seller, so always read the listing.

What is typically included

Usually included Sometimes included Usually not included
Block, crankshaft, rods, pistons, rings, bearings Oil pan and oil pump Intake and exhaust manifolds
Cylinder heads with valves and springs Timing cover and timing set Fuel injectors and fuel rails
Camshaft(s) and valvetrain Valve covers, water pump Sensors, wiring harness, engine computer
Head gaskets installed Accessories, flywheel or flexplate

Long block vs short block vs complete engine

A short block is the block and rotating assembly without heads; a long block adds the heads and valvetrain; a complete or turnkey engine adds intake, exhaust and often accessories. See short block vs long block.

What comes with a Cummins long block?

Diesel long blocks follow the same idea but often differ in whether fuel system parts, turbo and front covers are included. Read each listing carefully; our 6.7 Cummins engines and 5.9 Cummins engines state what each package includes.

Parts you will transfer or buy

  • Intake and exhaust manifolds, with new gaskets
  • Sensors, often new ones for critical items such as the crank and cam sensors
  • Water pump, thermostat and hoses if not included
  • Flywheel or flexplate, and the clutch on manual vehicles
  • Fluids and filters

See engine replacement checklist.

Questions to ask before ordering

  • Does the package include the oil pan, timing cover and water pump?
  • Is it new, remanufactured or rebuilt?
  • Which model years and engine codes does it fit?
  • Does it need any parts moved from your old engine?

Our listings describe what is included; ask a parts specialist if anything is unclear.

Why choose a long block?

A long block replaces all the major internal parts while letting you reuse good external parts from the old engine, which keeps cost down compared with a complete engine. It is a common choice when the old engine has internal damage; see how to tell if an engine is blown.
