The 545RFE is a five-speed electronically controlled automatic used in many Dodge, Ram and Jeep vehicles from the early 2000s, often behind Hemi and other V8 engines. Like other RFE transmissions, it defaults to second gear when it detects a fault. The most commonly reported 545RFE problems are limp mode from solenoid pack and pressure switch faults, valve body problems, speed sensor and transmission range sensor faults, harsh or flared shifts that need a relearn, and overheating when towing.
Common 545RFE problems
| Problem | Symptoms |
|---|---|
| Solenoid pack and pressure switches | Limp mode in second gear, harsh shifts; P0841, P0846, P0750 |
| Valve body | Erratic shifts, flare, slipping between gears |
| Speed sensors | Erratic shifts and limp mode; P0715, P0720 |
| Transmission range sensor | Wrong gear shown, no start in park; see transmission range sensor |
| Adaptive shift quality | Harsh or soft shifts after repairs; needs a quick learn |
| Overheating | Burnt fluid, slipping; see transmission overheating |
Limp mode in second
When the computer sees a fault it cannot manage, it holds second gear to protect the transmission. Read the codes before replacing parts: a pressure switch or solenoid fault points to the solenoid pack; speed sensor codes point to sensors or wiring; ratio codes such as P0730 point to internal slipping. See limp mode and transmission solenoid pack.
Overdrive problems
Complaints about fifth gear or lockup on the highway usually trace to the converter clutch, the solenoid pack or worn clutches, often after heat. Check fluid level and condition first.
Valve body problems
Wear in the valve body bores causes pressure loss, which shows as flared shifts and slipping that gets worse when hot. A replacement or remanufactured valve body often fixes it if the clutches are still good.
After any repair: the quick learn
RFE transmissions adapt clutch fill times. After a solenoid pack, valve body or battery disconnect, a scan-tool quick learn and a drive cycle restore shift quality.
545RFE maintenance
Use the ATF the manufacturer specifies, change it on the severe-service schedule if you tow, and check the level by the correct procedure, since RFE transmissions are sensitive to overfill and underfill. Many 545RFE problems begin with low or worn fluid and heat, so a temperature gauge or scan-tool reading on long climbs is worthwhile.
Symptoms worth acting on
- Sudden second-gear starts and no upshifts
- Flare between gears when hot
- Burnt-smelling fluid; see transmission fluid color
Repair or replace
