62TE Problems: Compounder, Solenoid Pack and Shifting

Common 62TE transmission problems in Chrysler and Dodge minivans and crossovers: compounder failures, solenoid pack faults, harsh shifts and limp mode.

The 62TE is a six-speed front-wheel-drive automatic used in Chrysler, Dodge and Volkswagen minivans and crossovers from 2007 onward, including the Grand Caravan, Town and Country, Journey and Routan. The most commonly reported 62TE problems are harsh or erratic shifts, solenoid pack faults, limp mode, valve body problems and failures of the underdrive compounder assembly that provides the extra gears. Many shift quality complaints improve with a software update and a quick learn.

Common 62TE problems

Problem Symptoms
Solenoid pack Limp mode, harsh shifts, pressure switch codes such as P0841 or P0846
Valve body Erratic or flared shifts, slipping when hot
Compounder (underdrive) assembly Noise, slipping or loss of certain gears, often with ratio codes
Harsh or delayed shifts Clunks, especially 1-2 and 3-2; may need a relearn or software update
Limp mode Held in one gear with a warning; see limp mode
Overheating Burnt fluid, worse behavior when hot

62TE compounder problems

The 62TE is based on the older four-speed 40TE/41TE design, with an added underdrive compounder at the back that provides the extra ratios. When the compounder’s clutches or bearings wear, the transmission can lose some gears, make noise or slip. This is internal and needs a rebuild or replacement.

Solenoid pack problems

The solenoid pack bolts to the outside of the case on many units, so it can be replaced without removing the transmission. Pressure switch and solenoid codes, limp mode and harsh shifts are the usual signs; see transmission solenoid pack and transmission solenoid symptoms.

Shift quality and the quick learn

Many 62TE complaints of harsh shifts are adaptive: the transmission controller learns clutch fill times. After repairs, a battery disconnect or a fluid change, a scan-tool quick learn and a drive cycle restore smooth shifts. Check for software updates for your vehicle.

Fluid

The 62TE requires a specific ATF. Using the wrong fluid causes shift problems and wear; see transmission fluid types and how to check transmission fluid.

Symptoms worth acting on

  • New whining or grinding from the transmission; see transmission noise
  • Loss of one or more gears
  • Repeated limp mode with the same codes
  • Shuddering or slipping that gets worse when warm

Early diagnosis matters: a solenoid pack or valve body problem caught early is far cheaper than driving until the clutches burn.
