BRZ and GR86 Exhaust: Layout, Torque Dip and Cat-Back Upgrades

How the BRZ, 86 and GR86 exhaust is laid out, the FA20 torque dip, which upgrades change sound or power, and the cat-backs that fit each generation.

The Subaru BRZ, Scion FR-S, Toyota 86 and GR86 share their exhaust layout: headers from the boxer engine, an over-pipe and front pipe with catalytic converters, and a cat-back with dual exits. A cat-back changes sound and saves some weight, while header changes on the first-generation FA20 cars are known for addressing the torque dip in the mid-range. Second-generation cars with the larger FA24 already make more mid-range torque.

The FA20 torque dip

First-generation cars (about 2013 to 2020) with the FA20 are known for a dip in torque in the middle of the rev range. Aftermarket headers and engine calibration are commonly used to smooth it. A cat-back alone does not change it much; see FA20 vs FA24.

BRZ exhaust upgrades

  • Cat-back: sound, weight and appearance; the simplest upgrade.
  • Headers: the biggest change in power delivery on FA20 cars, together with calibration; check emissions rules for your state.
  • Touring vs track: track versions are louder; touring versions reduce highway drone; see exhaust drone.

Weight savings

Aftermarket cat-backs are often lighter than the factory system, which helps a lightweight car like the BRZ and GR86. Titanium systems save the most; see titanium vs stainless exhaust.

BRZ exhaust sound

The flat-four has a distinctive note, and cat-backs mainly change volume and tone. Check sound clips from the maker and consider how much time you spend on the highway.

Installing a cat-back

Cat-backs bolt to the existing flange behind the catalytic converters and hang from the factory rubber hangers. With the car safely on ramps or jack stands, soak the old bolts with penetrating oil, support the old system as you unbolt it, fit new gaskets, hang the new system loosely, align the tips evenly in the bumper cutouts and then tighten everything. Recheck clamps and hangers after the first drive, because systems settle as they heat up.

Fitment across generations

Cat-backs often fit both generations, but check the year range in each listing; ours state their fitment clearly.
