The Subaru FA20 is a 2.0-liter (1,998 cc) flat-four with a square 86 x 86 mm bore and stroke, built in two main versions: the naturally aspirated FA20D in the 2013 to 2020 BRZ, Scion FR-S and Toyota 86, rated at 200 hp (205 hp with the manual from 2017), and the turbocharged, direct-injected FA20DIT in the 2015 to 2021 WRX, rated at 268 hp. Its successor, the 2.4-liter FA24, powers the current BRZ and GR86 (228 hp) and the 2022 and later WRX (271 hp).
FA20 and FA24 specs
| Engine | Displacement | Bore x stroke | Induction | Rating | Used in |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| FA20D | 2.0 L (1,998 cc) | 86 x 86 mm | Naturally aspirated, port and direct injection | 200 hp; 205 hp manual (2017 on) | BRZ, FR-S, 86 (2013 to 2020) |
| FA20DIT | 2.0 L (1,998 cc) | 86 x 86 mm | Turbocharged, direct injection | 268 hp | WRX (2015 to 2021) |
| FA24D | 2.4 L (2,387 cc) | 94 x 86 mm | Naturally aspirated | 228 hp | BRZ, GR86 (2022 on) |
| FA24F | 2.4 L (2,387 cc) | 94 x 86 mm | Turbocharged | 271 hp | WRX (2022 on) |
Compression ratio
The naturally aspirated FA20D runs a high 12.5:1 compression ratio, while the turbocharged FA20DIT uses a lower ratio suited to boost; see what is compression ratio? Built short blocks are sold in different compression ratios for each use, such as the IAG 800 Series FA20 blocks we list in 12.5:1 and 10.5:1 versions at $6,499.99.
Firing order and timing
Like other Subaru boxers, the FA engines use the 1-3-2-4 firing order. Unlike the older EJ engines, FA engines use a timing chain rather than a belt.
Known issues
See FA20 problems for the valve spring recall on early FA20D engines, the torque dip around 4,000 rpm and carbon buildup on direct-injected engines.
Port and direct injection
The FA20D uses both port and direct injection, which helps keep intake valves cleaner. The turbocharged FA20DIT is direct injection only, which is why intake valve carbon buildup is discussed more often on WRX engines.
Identifying your engine
The model and year settle it: a 2013 to 2020 BRZ, FR-S or 86 has the FA20D; a 2015 to 2021 WRX has the FA20DIT; later models have FA24 engines. The engine code is also on a label and in the VIN data.
FA20 vs FA24
The FA24 keeps the 86 mm stroke but adds a larger bore, raising displacement and torque; see FA20 vs FA24.
