5R110W vs 6R140: Super Duty TorqShift Five vs Six-Speed

5R110W vs 6R140: the Ford Super Duty five- and six-speed automatics compared by years, engines, gear ratios, fluid, problems and 5R110 vs 5R110W.

The 5R110W was the five-speed TorqShift automatic in Ford Super Duty trucks through the 2010 model year, behind the 6.0L and 6.4L Power Stroke diesels and gas V8 and V10 engines. The 6R140 replaced it for the 2011 model year, adding a sixth gear and paired with the new 6.7L Power Stroke and 6.2L gas V8. The 6R140 is a development of the same heavy-duty concept, but the two are not interchangeable without major changes.

What the extra gear does

The 6R140’s deeper first gear helps a loaded truck launch, and its taller top gear lowers highway rpm. Together with the 6.7’s control strategy, that gives smoother towing and better fuel economy than the earlier trucks.

5R110W vs 5R110

You will see both names. The W stands for wide ratio, and parts listings often drop it; the important thing is to match the exact transmission and model year for your truck, since internal parts and calibrations changed over its run.

Common problems

  • 5R110W: worn clutches and converter problems with heavy towing or added power, solenoid and valve body faults, and heat; see 5R110W problems.
  • 6R140: converter and clutch wear under heavy loads and added power; see 6R140 problems.

Before replacing either one

Read the codes, check the fluid level and condition, and look at line pressure and solenoid operation; electrical and valve body faults can feel like a worn transmission. On the 6.0L and 6.4L Power Stroke trucks, cooling system problems also raise transmission temperatures, so check the radiator and coolers. See transmission line pressure and transmission solenoid symptoms. If the pan shows heavy debris, see what the metal on the pan magnet means.

For both, regular fluid service and a clean cooler matter most; see transmission overheating.

To confirm your code, check the build data or the identification tag on the transmission; see what transmission do I have?
