Dodge 4.7 vs 5.7 Hemi: Differences, Reliability and Towing

Dodge 4.7 vs 5.7 Hemi: displacement, valvetrain, rated power, known issues, reliability, towing, swapping and what to check on a used truck.

The Dodge 4.7 and 5.7 Hemi are both Chrysler V8s that shared trucks and SUVs in the 2000s, but they are very different engines. The 4.7 is a 4.7-liter single-overhead-cam V8 rated at about 235 hp in early versions, used in the Ram 1500, Dakota, Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee. The 5.7 Hemi is a larger pushrod V8 rated at 345 hp from 2003 to 2008 and more in later years. The Hemi has much more power for towing; the 4.7’s reputation depends heavily on maintenance, since it is sensitive to oil sludge and overheating.

4.7 vs 5.7 Hemi at a glance

Dodge 4.7 5.7 Hemi
Displacement 4.7 L (287 cu in) 5.7 L (345 cu in)
Valvetrain Single overhead cam per bank, timing chains Pushrod, two valves per cylinder
Rated power About 235 hp early; later revised versions rated higher 345 hp (2003-2008), 390 hp (2009-2012), 395 hp in most later versions
Known issues Oil sludge, overheating damage including dropped valve seats Lifter and cam wear (Hemi tick), MDS lifters, exhaust manifold bolts

Which is more reliable?

A well-maintained example of either can last a long time. The 4.7 is less forgiving of long oil change intervals and overheating, which cause sludge and, in bad cases, dropped valve seats. The Hemi’s main known issue is lifter and camshaft wear. See Dodge 4.7 engine, 5.7 Hemi problems and Hemi tick.

Towing and everyday driving

The Hemi’s extra displacement and power make it the better choice for regular towing and heavy loads. The 4.7 is adequate for light-duty use but works harder with a trailer, which raises temperatures and fuel use.

Can you swap a 5.7 into a 4.7 truck?

It has been done, but it is a major project: engine mounts, wiring, computer, cooling, exhaust and often the transmission and gearing differ. Replacing a worn 4.7 with another 4.7 is far simpler.

Buying a used truck with either

Ask for oil change records, check the coolant for oil or sludge, and look for signs of past overheating on a 4.7. On a Hemi, listen for a tick at idle and check for misfire codes; see how long a 5.7 Hemi lasts.
