GM’s LS engines are aluminum and iron small-block V8s built from 1997 onward in two generations, Gen III and Gen IV, with the Gen V LT engines following in 2014. The most widely known car engines are the 5.7-liter LS1 and LS6, the 6.0-liter LS2, the 6.2-liter LS3 and the 7.0-liter LS7; the truck versions sold as Vortec engines include the 5.3 and 6.0. The LS3, for example, is rated at 430 hp in the 2008-2013 Corvette. The charts below list displacement, bore and stroke and the Corvette ratings GM published.
LS car engine specs
| Engine | Gen | Displacement | Bore x stroke (in) | Corvette rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LS1 | III | 5.7 L (346 cu in) | 3.898 x 3.622 | 345 hp (1997-2000), 350 hp (2001-2004) |
| LS6 | III | 5.7 L (346 cu in) | 3.898 x 3.622 | 385 hp (2001 Z06), 405 hp (2002-2004 Z06) |
| LS2 | IV | 6.0 L (364 cu in) | 4.000 x 3.622 | 400 hp (2005-2007) |
| LS3 | IV | 6.2 L (376 cu in) | 4.065 x 3.622 | 430 hp; 436 hp with dual-mode exhaust (2008-2013) |
| LS7 | IV | 7.0 L (427 cu in) | 4.125 x 4.000 | 505 hp (2006-2013 Z06) |
| LT1 (Gen V) | V | 6.2 L (376 cu in) | 4.065 x 3.622 | 455 hp; 460 hp with performance exhaust (2014-2019) |
All of these use aluminum blocks. The LS7 adds a dry-sump oiling system, and the Gen V LT1 adds direct injection. In the 2010-2015 Camaro SS with the manual transmission, the LS3 is rated at 426 hp.
LS truck engine specs (Vortec 5.3 and 6.0)
| Engine | Gen | Displacement | Bore x stroke (in) | Block |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5.3 LM7 | III | 5.3 L (325 cu in) | 3.780 x 3.622 | Cast iron |
| 5.3 LY5 | IV | 5.3 L (325 cu in) | 3.780 x 3.622 | Cast iron |
| 5.3 LC9 | IV | 5.3 L (325 cu in) | 3.780 x 3.622 | Aluminum |
| 6.0 Vortec 6000 (such as the LQ4) | III / IV | 6.0 L (364 cu in) | 4.000 x 3.622 | Cast iron |
GM rated its truck engines differently by year, vehicle and version, so check the rating for your truck in its documentation rather than relying on one number. Gen IV truck engines such as the LY5 and LC9 use Active Fuel Management, which shuts off cylinders at light load.
5.3 oil capacity
Gen III and Gen IV 5.3 truck engines take about 6 quarts of oil with a filter change, while the later Gen V 5.3 introduced for 2014 takes about 8 quarts. Use the viscosity and quantity in your owner’s manual.
Firing order
Every LS and LT engine in these charts uses the 1-8-7-2-6-5-4-3 firing order; our firing order guide shows the cylinder numbering.
