Choosing a 4 HP outboard
- Shaft length: match it to your transom height: about 15″ for a short shaft, 20″ for a long shaft and 25″ for an extra-long shaft. In the model code, S means short, L long, and X, XL or UL extra-long. See our outboard shaft length guide.
- Tiller or remote: tiller models steer and throttle from the handle on the motor. Remote models are steered from a console and need control cables, a control box and steering.
- Owning one: what size outboard do I need? · electric vs pull start · break-in procedure · won’t start · kill switch and lanyard · spark plugs · overheating · won’t idle · loses power at full throttle · trim not working · milky lower unit oil · how to flush it · tilt and trim fluid · stiff steering cable · anodes · fuel lines · tachometer settings · thermostat · ignition switch · trim gauge · won’t go into gear · how many hours is a lot.
- Comparing: outboard motor prices by HP · tiller vs remote · EFI vs carbureted · Tohatsu vs Mercury · Suzuki vs Mercury · Suzuki vs Tohatsu.
- By brand: Mercury from $1,535.00, Suzuki from $1,560.00, Tohatsu from $1,500.00.
