P0192 Code: Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Low, Causes and Fixes

P0192 means Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Circuit Low. Symptoms, common causes, how to diagnose it and whether it is safe to drive.

P0192 means Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Circuit Low. The fuel rail pressure sensor signal voltage is lower than the expected range. It is a generic OBD-II code, so the definition is the same on any make, but the most likely cause varies by engine; confirm with a scan tool and the service information for your vehicle before buying parts.

What P0192 means

Modern engines measure boost and fuel rail pressure and compare them with a desired value calculated from engine speed, load and throttle. When actual pressure falls short of desired for long enough, the computer sets a code and often reduces power to protect the engine. Watching desired and actual values side by side on a scan tool shows whether the shortfall is constant or only appears under load.

P0192 symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Hard starting or stalling
  • Reduced power on some engines

Common causes of P0192

  • Wiring short to ground or open reference
  • Failed sensor
  • Damaged connector

How to diagnose P0192

  1. Check the sensor reading with the engine off; it should be near zero after sitting
  2. Inspect the wiring and connector
  3. Check the 5-volt reference and ground

Can you drive with P0192?

Short distances only; the computer may limit power.

P0192 tips

Some rail pressure sensors are sold only with the fuel rail; confirm the circuit is good before replacing an expensive assembly. A low-circuit code is electrical, so a short to ground or an open 5-volt reference is more likely than a real pressure problem.

Will P0192 clear itself?

If the fault stops, the computer turns off the check engine light by itself after several drive cycles without seeing it again, and the code stays in memory as history for a while. Clearing P0192 with a scan tool after a repair is fine, but if the cause is still there the code returns, sometimes within one drive. Disconnecting the battery also clears codes on most vehicles, but it erases learned fuel trims and idle settings as well.
