P2646 Code: Rocker Arm Actuator Stuck Off, Causes and Fixes

P2646 means "A" Rocker Arm Actuator System Performance or Stuck Off (Bank 1). Symptoms, common causes, how to diagnose it and whether it is safe to drive.

P2646 means “A” Rocker Arm Actuator System Performance or Stuck Off (Bank 1). The computer commanded the variable valve lift system (rocker arm actuator A) to switch, but the oil pressure switch did not confirm the change, so the system appears stuck off. It is a generic OBD-II code, so the definition is the same on any make, but the most likely cause varies by engine; confirm with a scan tool and the service information for your vehicle before buying parts.

What P2646 means

The engine computer uses the crankshaft position sensor to know engine speed and piston position, and the camshaft sensors to know which stroke each cylinder is on. On engines with variable valve timing, oil-driven cam phasers rotate the camshafts relative to the crankshaft under the control of solenoids. Timing codes come from a sensor that cannot be read, or from a measured cam angle that does not match the commanded one, so oil level and condition, sensor signals and mechanical timing all need checking.

P2646 symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Loss of power at higher rpm
  • Sometimes no noticeable symptom at low speed

Common causes of P2646

  • Low oil level or the wrong viscosity
  • Clogged screen at the oil control solenoid
  • Faulty oil pressure switch for the system
  • Sticking solenoid

How to diagnose P2646

  1. Check oil level and condition, and confirm the oil viscosity matches the specification
  2. Inspect and clean the screen under the solenoid where accessible
  3. Test the oil pressure switch and its wiring
  4. Command the solenoid with a scan tool

Can you drive with P2646?

Usually yes, with reduced high-rpm power; fix oil-related causes promptly.

P2646 tips

Variable valve lift systems switch rocker arms with oil pressure, so oil level and viscosity matter a great deal. Many P2646 codes clear after an oil change with the specified oil and cleaning the solenoid screen.

Will P2646 clear itself?

If the fault stops, the computer turns off the check engine light by itself after several drive cycles without seeing it again, and the code stays in memory as history for a while. Clearing P2646 with a scan tool after a repair is fine, but if the cause is still there the code returns, sometimes within one drive. Disconnecting the battery also clears codes on most vehicles, but it erases learned fuel trims and idle settings as well.

When it is more than a sensor

If a stretched chain has already jumped time and damaged valves, or low oil pressure has worn the engine, a repair can cost more than a replacement; see engine replacement cost and compare engines by code on our engines page.
