P0128 Code: Thermostat Below Regulating Temp, Causes and Fixes

P0128 means Thermostat Below Regulating Temp. Symptoms, common causes, how to diagnose it and whether it is safe to drive.

P0128 means Coolant Thermostat (Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature). The engine is taking too long to warm up, or never reaches its normal operating temperature, which usually means the thermostat is stuck open. It is a generic OBD-II code, so the definition is the same on any make, but the most likely cause varies by engine; confirm with a scan tool and the service information for your vehicle before buying parts.

What P0128 means

The coolant temperature reading feeds many systems: warm-up fueling, ignition timing, idle speed, cooling fan control, transmission shift timing and often the dash gauge. A wrong reading causes symptoms far beyond the cooling system, and a real overheat can damage an engine quickly. Confirm the actual temperature with a scan tool or an infrared thermometer before replacing parts.

P0128 symptoms

  • Temperature gauge reading low or slow to rise
  • Weak heat from the heater
  • Lower fuel economy

Common causes of P0128

  • Thermostat stuck open or opening too early
  • Faulty coolant temperature sensor reading low
  • Low coolant level
  • Cooling fan running all the time

How to diagnose P0128

  1. Watch coolant temperature on a scan tool during warm-up from cold
  2. Feel the upper radiator hose: if it warms up at the same time as the engine, the thermostat is open too early
  3. Check coolant level and the temperature sensor

Can you drive with P0128?

Yes, it is not urgent, but replace the thermostat: a cold-running engine wears faster and uses more fuel.

P0128 tips

P0128 often shows up in cold weather, when a thermostat that is stuck slightly open cannot bring the engine up to temperature. Use the thermostat temperature rating listed for your engine and bleed the cooling system afterward, because trapped air causes false readings and hot spots.

Will P0128 clear itself?

If the fault stops, the computer turns off the check engine light by itself after several drive cycles without seeing it again, and the code stays in memory as history for a while. Clearing P0128 with a scan tool after a repair is fine, but if the cause is still there the code returns, sometimes within one drive. Disconnecting the battery also clears codes on most vehicles, but it erases learned fuel trims and idle settings as well.

When it is more than a sensor

Most cooling codes end with a thermostat, sensor, fan or leak repair. If the engine overheated badly enough to fail the head gasket or warp the heads, compare a repair against a replacement on our engines page and read engine replacement cost.
