Bow Mount vs Transom Mount Trolling Motor: Which to Choose

Bow mount vs transom mount trolling motors compared on control, features, boats and cost, whether a transom motor can go on the bow, and which one to buy.

A bow-mount trolling motor sits on the front of the boat and pulls it, which gives precise control for fishing: you can steer the bow into wind, follow a shoreline and, on GPS models, hold position automatically. A transom-mount trolling motor clamps to the back of the boat and pushes it, steered with a tiller handle. Transom motors are simpler and cheaper and suit small boats, jon boats, canoes and occasional use; bow mounts suit anglers who spend hours positioning the boat.

Why bow mounts are popular for fishing

Pulling from the front makes the boat track like a car steered by its front wheels, so small corrections hold a line precisely. GPS features such as Spot-Lock keep the boat in place while you fish; see what is Spot-Lock? Minn Kota bow mounts range from the cable-steer Maxxum to the GPS-driven Terrova and Ultrex; see Terrova vs Ultrex vs Ulterra.

Can you put a transom-mount trolling motor on the bow?

On small boats, some owners mount a transom motor at the bow with a bracket, but it is a compromise: the tiller is awkward to reach, the shaft may be too short for the bow height, and the motor is not designed for bow loads in rough water. For regular bow use, a purpose-built bow mount is the safer choice. See trolling motor mounts and brackets.

Sizing either type

Choose thrust from loaded boat weight and match the shaft to the mounting height; see trolling motor size guide. Voltage sets battery count; see 24V and 36V trolling motor batteries.

Which should you buy?

  • Small boat, occasional fishing, tight budget: transom mount.
  • Fishing boat used often, wind and current: bow mount.
  • Want GPS anchoring: a GPS bow mount.
