The oil pressure warning light means the engine’s oil pressure has dropped below a safe minimum. It is one of the few warnings that means stop now: turn the engine off as soon as it is safe, because running without oil pressure can destroy bearings and the crankshaft in minutes. Then check the oil level.
What to do when the oil light comes on
- Pull over safely and turn the engine off.
- Wait a few minutes, then check the dipstick with the car on level ground.
- If the oil is low, add the correct oil and look for leaks before restarting.
- If the level is fine but the light stays on, do not keep driving; have the pressure checked with a mechanical gauge.
Common causes
- Low oil level from leaks or oil consumption; see oil leaks
- Wrong or badly degraded oil, which thins out when hot
- Clogged oil pickup or filter
- Worn oil pump or worn bearings, often with knocking; see engine knocking
- A failed oil pressure sensor or switch giving a false warning; see oil pressure sensor
Oil light flickers at idle
A light that flickers at hot idle and goes out when you rev the engine means pressure is marginal at low speed. That can be thin or low oil, but it is also a classic sign of a worn engine with excessive bearing clearance. Check the level and oil type first, then measure pressure with a mechanical gauge; see low oil pressure for what pressure is normal.
How to prevent low oil pressure
- Check the oil level regularly, especially on high-mileage engines that use oil between changes.
- Use the viscosity and specification in the owner manual; oil that is too thin loses pressure when hot.
- Change oil and filter on schedule so sludge does not block the pickup screen or filter.
- Fix leaks promptly and never ignore a ticking lifter or a knock that appears after an oil warning.
Oil pressure light vs oil change reminder
| Warning | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Red oil can light | Low oil pressure: stop the engine |
| Amber oil level warning (some cars) | Oil level low: add oil soon |
| Oil life or service reminder | Scheduled oil change due |
If the engine was run without oil pressure
Knocking, ticking or metal in the oil after an oil pressure warning usually means bearing damage; see spun rod bearings and seized engines and how to tell if an engine is blown. A damaged engine often costs less to replace than to rebuild; see engine replacement cost and our engines, listed by engine code.
