OBD-II trouble codes are five-character codes stored by your vehicle’s computer when it detects a fault. The list below covers the most common engine, misfire, cooling, timing, boost and transmission codes, each linked to a guide with symptoms, causes, diagnosis steps and whether it is safe to drive. Every car and light truck sold in the US since the 1996 model year supports OBD-II, so any scan tool plugged into the port under the dash can read them.
How to read an OBD-II code
- First letter: P is powertrain (engine and transmission), B is body, C is chassis and U is network communication.
- First digit: 0 means a generic code with the same definition on every make; 1 means a manufacturer-specific code.
- Second digit: the subsystem. 1 and 2 are fuel and air metering, 3 is ignition and misfire, 4 is auxiliary emission controls, 5 is vehicle speed and idle control, 6 is computer and output circuits, and 7, 8 and 9 are transmission.
- Last two digits: the specific fault, for example P0301 is a misfire in cylinder 1.
Before you replace parts
A code tells you which test failed, not which part failed. A lean code can come from a vacuum leak, a dirty sensor or a weak fuel pump, so write down every stored code and the freeze-frame data, fix the first code in the chain, and recheck. Several codes at once often share one cause: misfire codes alongside lean codes usually point to the lean condition first.
