P0711 Code: Trans Fluid Temp Sensor Range, Causes and Fixes

P0711 means Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor Circuit Range/Performance. Symptoms, common causes, how to diagnose it and whether it is safe to drive.

P0711 means Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor Circuit Range/Performance. The transmission fluid temperature reading does not change the way the computer expects, for example staying cold after a long drive. It is a generic OBD-II code, so the definition is the same on any make, but the most likely cause varies by engine; confirm with a scan tool and the service information for your vehicle before buying parts.

What P0711 means

Electronically controlled automatics are run by a transmission control module (TCM), a separate box or part of the engine computer. It reads speed sensors, the range sensor and fluid temperature to decide when to shift, and drives solenoids that apply clutches and the torque converter clutch. Many basic code readers only show the generic P0700; a scan tool that reads the transmission module shows the specific fault. Check fluid level and condition first, since low or burnt fluid causes many transmission codes.

P0711 symptoms

  • Harsh or delayed shifts
  • Torque converter clutch not engaging
  • Incorrect fluid temperature on the scan tool

Common causes of P0711

  • Failed fluid temperature sensor
  • Wiring or connector problems, often inside the transmission harness
  • Actual overheating from heavy towing

How to diagnose P0711

  1. Compare the fluid temperature reading with engine coolant temperature after a drive
  2. Check transmission fluid level and condition first
  3. Check the sensor resistance at the case connector

Can you drive with P0711?

Usually yes, but converter lockup and shift quality may suffer. Avoid towing until repaired.

P0711 tips

A fluid temperature sensor that reads cold keeps some transmissions from locking the converter or using top gear, which looks like a mechanical fault. Compare the reading with coolant temperature after a 20-minute drive; they should be in the same general range.

Will P0711 clear itself?

If the fault stops, the computer turns off the check engine light by itself after several drive cycles without seeing it again, and the code stays in memory as history for a while. Clearing P0711 with a scan tool after a repair is fine, but if the cause is still there the code returns, sometimes within one drive. Disconnecting the battery also clears codes on most vehicles, but it erases learned fuel trims and idle settings as well.
