About the 10L80

The 10L80 is GM’s version of the ten-speed automatic developed jointly by GM and Ford; Ford builds its version as the 10R80. GM uses the 10L80 in late-model Silverado and Sierra pickups and in Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Escalade SUVs. Ten closely spaced gears keep the engine near its most efficient speed, which helps fuel economy and towing response.
