How to choose an outboard motor
- Horsepower: never exceed the maximum horsepower on your boat’s capacity plate. Smaller portable motors suit tenders, inflatables and jon boats; larger tiller and remote models suit heavier fishing boats.
- Shaft length: match the motor to your transom height: 15″ short, 20″ long or 25″ extra-long. The model code shows which one a motor has.
- Steering and starting: tiller motors steer from the handle; remote models need a console, controls and steering. Many listings also state manual or electric start; check before you order.
- Weight: on a portable motor you lift on and off, a lighter model is easier to live with.
